Mammuthus primigenius primigenius (Blumenbach, 1799)

Woolly mammoth

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonym: Elephas primigenius Blumenbach, 1799 (original combination)

Conservation Status

Extinct

Last record: c. 1730 BC (Vartanyan et al. 1995)

Although one of the best candidates for de-extinction through cloning, some would say that this is in fact unnecessary. There have been numerous reports of woolly mammoths, or creatures fitting their description, from the former USSR throughout the 20th century (Heuvelmans, 1965:221-238; Anonymous, 1978). And several mythological beasts are said to derive from the Woolly mammoth (Jandáček, 2018).

Distribution

Eurasia and North America

Biology & Ecology

Hypodigm

Probably the most famous of all recently extinct species, the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) became extinct c. 1730 BC when the Wrangel Island population became extinct (Vartanyan et al. 1995). DNA analysis of frozen specimens uncovered during palaeontological expeditions etc. have uncovered specimens so well preserved that DNA sequencing has been permitted. Apart from letting us study the amount of genetic diversity within the various mammoth populations just before they went extinct, another startling discovery has been made. Mammoths actually consist of two very distinct species who diverged from each other around the same time as the ancestor of both the African and Asian elephant lineages speciated.
