The assignment of the various descriptions of equids found in medieval writings and ancient paintings in caves to species level is often extremely difficult. This is partly due to lack of knowledge of how many species actually inhabited Europe during the recent past, as well as levels of phenotypic variation within each taxon. Some of these reports may conceivably refer to E. hydruntinus individuals, which has previously been suggested to have survived into the 15 or 16th century based upon such putative accounts of the species.
