Acanthagrion taxaense has not been found since the last of the type series was collected in 1965 (von Ellenrieder, 2009). This species probably does not belong in Acanthagrion (Leonard, 1977:148). This species seems to have been declared officially extinct by the Brazilian government in the early 2000's (Fundação Biodiversitas, 2003).

55 specimens have been preserved as part of the type series (40 males, 15 females) (Santos, 1965; von Ellenrieder, 2009).
