Erica recurvata Andr.
Taxonomy & Nomenclature
Conservation Status
Last record: very early 1800's (c.1805 or before) (wild); c.1805 or later (cultivation) (both Raimondo et al., 2013:31)
Rediscovered on 30 August 2007 (Raimondo et al., 2013:31 [as 2007])
"Until 2007 the species was known solely from a painting by Andrews from the early 1800s and was thought to be a garden hybrid. Seed was presumably collected in the Cape by Niven in the early 1800s and sent to England where plants were grown. When they flowered, they were illustrated and the description published by Andrews. It was only when a small wild population was discovered near Napier in the Western Cape that the origin of the plants was confirmed as South Africa."
