Synonym/s: Streptopelia picturata rostrata Bonaparte, 1855:16; Turtur rostrata Bonaparte, 1855:16; Nesoenas picturata rostrata Bonaparte, 1855:16; Nesoenas rostrata Bonaparte, 1855:16
Conservation Status
The conservation status of this newly recognized species (up from subspecific rank) is not clear. A major decline was caused by hybridization with Nesoenas picturata, but whether the species was completely hybridized out of existence, or whether any pure populations exist, remains uncertain. Bird Island may offer the greatest hope of rediscovery (or relocation, depending upon your opinion over its likelihood of being extinct).
