Chara rohlenae J.Vilhelm (1912)
Taxonomy & Nomenclature
Synonym/s: Chara gymnophylla f. rohlenae (J.Vilhelm) N.Filarszky (1931:91); Chara vulgaris var. [gymnophylla] f. rohlenae (Vilhelm) R.D.Wood (1962)
Conservation Status
Globally Rediscovered (Blaženčić & Stevanović, 2018)
Last record: 1900-1912 (Montenegro; confirmed) (Vilhelm, 1912; Blaženčić & Stevanović, 2018) 1925 (Bosnia & Herzegovina; unconfirmed) (Filarszky, 1931; Blaženčić & Stevanović, 2018)
Rediscovered in: June-August 2010 (Blaženčić & Stevanović, 2018)
Until its rediscovery in Serbia in the summer of 2010 (Blaženčić & Stevanović, 2018), the species was only known with certainty from the type specimens from Montenegro (Vilhelm, 1912; Blaženčić & Stevanović, 2018). Other herbarium specimens that are alleged to represent this species, Greek collections from 1885 by T. Heldreich (before the species was described) and 1925 collections by K. Maly from Bosnia & Herzegovina (13 years after the protologue), have been reported (Filarszky, 1931). But the accuracy of these identifications is not certain given the age and state of the material, in addition to historical dispute as to the status of rohlenae (Blaženčić & Stevanović, 2018), although the general habitat is consistent with that reported for known C. rohlenae specimens (Ibid.).
