This species has been identified as one of the 50 best candidates for de-extinction, ranking 22/50 (Albani Rocchetti et al., 2022). Beierkuhnlein et al. (2021) state that the species was already thought to be likely extinct in the 1970's, seemingly unaware of its rediscovery during that decade, and its final disappearance in the next.
