Ctenomys magellanicus is treated as monotypic by (Teta et al., 2020), who regard C. m. dicki as a synonym, although they note: "While it is possible that this form, endemic to Riesco Island, Chile, could represent a distinct subspecies, additional samples and evidence (e.g., genetic) are required to evaluate with accuracy its distinction" (Ibid.).

Dick's Tuco Tuco (Ctenomys magellanicus dicki) is known only from the type series collected by Osgood (Osgood, 1943; Miller et al., 1983).
