Last record: 16 March 1840 (Barker et al., 1999:140) or later
H. crassinervia was thought to be extinct in 1961 (Anonymous, 1996), but in the early 1980's material originating in the Burrendong arboretum (inland NSW) came to be regarded as H. crassinervia (Marriott, 2021b), until research conducted by Alex S. George showed that this supposed H. crassinervia was an impostor, being in reality a natural hybrid (of uncertain geographical origin: WA vs NSW) of Hakea myrtoides and Hakea petiolaris and this was subsequently marketed from the 1980's as Hakea ‘Burrendong Beauty’ (Marriott, 2021b). Although this research was not universally known, as even into the mid-1990's the hybrid was still being identified with H. crassinervia (e.g. Anonymous, 1996), until H. crassinervia was reduced to a synonym of typical H. petiolaris in the monumental Flora of Australia (Barker et al., 1999:140), and followed by other authorities until today (e.g. Humphreys et al., 2019; POWO, 2024). But even today the hybrid form (unrelated to the true H. crassinervia) is still sometimes marketed as Hake crassinervia c.v. 'Burrendong Beauty' in the horticultural trade (Marriott, 2021b).
