Elaphoglossum sprucei (Baker) Diels (1899:334)

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonym/s: Acrostichum sprucei Baker; Hook. & Baker, Syn. Fil. 411 (1868)

Conservation Status

Last record: before 1863 (Navarrete & Pitman, 2003a)

Rediscovered in January 2012 (observation by Dr. Barbara "Bitty" Roy); 5 August 2020 (confirmation by Dr. Robbin C. Moran)

IUCN RedList status: Critically Endangered

iNaturalist has several verified/research grade photographic observations of this species since 2012, after not being recorded for at least 148 years. Although Dr. Barbara (Bitty) Roy does not explicitly claim to have rediscovered the species on iNaturalist, the IUCN reported another species, Elaphoglossum pala, as rediscovered after 100+ years from an unknown type locality (Navarrete & Pitman, 2003b), whereas this species was missing for potentially longer and the type locality is known (so it could be searched). Thus the species is best treated as rediscovered.
