Conservation Status
Missing (Suckling et al., 2004 [as "extinct or missing"]; Wood et al., 2019) or Extinct (Wagner et al., 1999:54; Albani Rocchetti et al., 2022; NatureServe, 2024)
Last record: early 1900's (collection) (NatureServe, 2024); 1920 (Wood et al., 2019); 1980 (Price et al., 2004 fide Suckling et al., 2004); 1997 (uncertain) (see Suckling et al., 2004:48/63)
"Cyperus neokunthianus was endemic to the West Maui Mountains, Maui, Hawaii. It is listed as extinct by Wagner et al. 1999 and as missing by NatureServe. The latter states that it was last seen in the early 1900s, but Price et al. 2004 state that was last seen in 1980. A USFWS database suggests it was last seen in 1997, but there is no supporting documentation. We judge 1980 to be the last reasonably certain observation date."
