The nominate subspecies, Notiomystis cincta cincta, was suggested to be synonymous with the only other subspecies, Notiomystes cincta hautura, by (Higgins & Christidis, 2009), which would qualify the nominate as taxonomically rediscovered. The formal synonymisation has been made by at least (Checklist Committee (OSNZ), 2022:210).
