Enigmatic owlet-nightjar, New Caledonian owlet-nightjar

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonym/s: Aegotheles cristatus savesi Layard & Layard, 1881

Conservation Status

Missing

Last record: 1880 or 1915; 1998 (Martin et al., 2023)

IUCN RedList status: Critically Endangered

The conservation status of this species is unclear. There has been no definite record since either 1880 or 1915, when the last of the two known specimens was taken (accounts vary). Although there have been numerous sightings since the 1950's, and the lastest, by Dr. Jonathan Eckstrom, is considered by EDGE (http://www.edgeofexistence.org/) to constitute the rediscovery of the species. Urgent surveys are required to assess the geographical extent of any remaining population.
