Grus antigone luzonica Hachisuka, 1941

Luzon sarus crane

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonym/s: Antigone antigone luzonica Hachisuka, 1941

Conservation Status

Missing or invalid

Last record: 1970's

A population of the Sarus crane formerly occurred on Luzon in the Philippines. The last reports of this species were from the 1970's, with specific expeditions to find this species in the late 1970's, and 1980's (Madsen, 1981; Dickinson et. al. 1991). The population is almost certainly now extinct, but its exact taxonomic position is debated. It is sometimes regarded as a population of G. a. sharpei (Johnsgard, 1983; Dickinson, 2003). However given its isolation of some 700 miles (1126.5 km) from any other Grus antigone population gene flow would be minimal; thus its status depends upon how long it has occurred on Luzon, as it is likely to manifest only cryptic diversity as the species seems to inherently be very adaptable.
