Taxonomy & Nomenclature

For a detailed taxonomic history of A. gracilis see (Belk & Bowen, 1990). Now considered a senior synonym of the younger (extant) Artemia franciscana, but Denton Belk and Dr. Sarane T. Bowen successfully applied to have the former suppressed (Anonymous, 1993).

A specimen apparently attributed to Artemia gracilis by Addison Emery Verrill, which was collected by S. C. Ball on Laysan Island, Hawaii in April 1923 is in the Peabody Museum collection, and bears the accession number "YPM IZCR 006421" (Source).
