Crambione cookii Mayer, 1910:677

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonym/s: Crambione cooki Mayer, 1910:677

Conservation Status

Last record: 1910 or before (Mayer, 1910; Gershwin et al., 2010:97)

Rediscovered in: summer 1999-2000 by Puk Scivyer (photo) (Gershwin et al., 2010:97); 15 November 2013 by Puk Scivyer (live specimen) (QM G333723QM G333723)

The apparent rarity of the species (Gershwin et al., 2010) has decreased greatly since media reports of its rediscovery, prompting the public to come forward with their own encounters with the species (Silva, 2013). This emphasises the importance of the public as potential recordists of putatively rare wildlife, allowing us to filter out such under-recorded taxa and thus help identify those taxa that are truly rare.
