Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonyms: Bubalus wansijocki Boule & Chardin, 1928; Bubalus wansjocki Boule & Chardin, 1928; Bubalus wangsjoki Boule & Chardin, 1928; Buballus wansjocki Boule & Chardin, 1928 [orth. error used by (Dong et al., 1999:130)]

 

Liu et. al. (2004) showed that the Short-horned water buffalo was most probably a truly wild species of buffalo which became extinct some time after 1200 BC, as opposed to it being a domesticated form of buffalo as it had previously been considered to be. B. wansijocki is a junior synonym of B. mephistopheles (Liang et al., 2026).
