Taxonomy & Nomenclature
Synonym/s: Haematopus meadewaldoi (Bannerman, 1913:33); Haematopus niger meadewaldoi (Bannerman, 1913:33); Haematopus niger meade-waldoi Bannerman, 1913:33 (original combination)
Although now invariably treated as a full species, new DNA sequencing has shown that it is nested within the Eurasian Oystercatcher (H. ostralegus) (Senfeld et al., Accepted). Thus it is either a valid subspecies or a colour morph. I have therefore taken the conservative position that it represents a recently extinct subspecies.
