Haematopus ostralegus meadewaldoi (Bannerman, 1913:33)

Canarian black oystercatcher, Canary Islands oystercatcher; Meade-Waldo’s black oystercatcher

Taxonomy & Nomenclature

Synonym/s: Haematopus meadewaldoi (Bannerman, 1913:33); Haematopus niger meadewaldoi (Bannerman, 1913:33); Haematopus niger meade-waldoi Bannerman, 1913:33 (original combination)

Although now invariably treated as a full species, new DNA sequencing has shown that it is nested within the Eurasian Oystercatcher (H. ostralegus) (Senfeld et al., Accepted). Thus it is either a valid subspecies or a colour morph. I have therefore taken the conservative position that it represents a recently extinct subspecies.

Conservation Status

Extinct or invalid

Last record: 1913 (1940's?)

IUCN RedList status: Extinct

Distribution

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote (and their offshore islets), Canary Islands, North Africa (Spain politically)
