13 preserved specimens are known (BirdLife International, 2008).

However, a fourteenth specimen in the St Petersburg Zoological Museum was recently discovered (Smirnov, 2016).
Reports of the persistence of this species into the 1930's are considered flawed (WCMC, 1992).
